Ihosy, March 29, 2025 – “The struggle for freedom, a flame passed down to generations” was the theme chosen to mark this year’s commemoration of the historic March 29, 1947 uprising in Ihosy. The event began with an ecumenical prayer service held at FJKM Ihosy Fahazavana Church at 7 a.m.
The spiritual gathering aimed to honor God, pray for the Nation, and remember those who gave their lives for the love of their homeland. Christians from different denominations, local government officials, ordinary citizens, and some surviving veterans came together in unity, led by the Malagasy Council of Christian Churches (FFKM).
The service was led by Pastor Andrianandraina Mamy Alson of the FJKM, joined by Pastor Andriandraina Nomenjanahary Emilson, head of the “Tafika Masina Maharitra” (Permanent Holy Army) from the FLM Cathedral of Ihosy, and Randrianirina Jean Noel, lead coordinator of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ihosy.
The two-hour service featured teachings that emphasized faith and patriotism. “The ox must die for us to have meat. Christ died so that we could be forgiven and set free. In the same way, our ancestors gave their lives so that we could enjoy the freedom we have today,” said one of the preachers.
A key moment was the speech delivered by Mrs. Marijaona Wicky Elinah, Deputy Head of the Ihosy District, representing the attending government officials. Her address brought the spiritual gathering to a close before the final blessing.
The commemoration continued with a solemn military ceremony and the laying of wreaths at the monument honoring the fallen heroes.
It was a meaningful and heartfelt celebration, a reminder that the hard-won freedom must be cherished and faithfully passed on to future generations.
